Measurement of a packing plant

Engineering company Kvejborg – Food industry

In a pilot project, the task was to measure two robot workstations in a large bakery during ongoing production. The existing robot tools were to be submerged in order to optimize the overall process. The bakery’s production runs in three shifts. A very fast recording method was needed to measure the packaging workstations, since stopping production involves high costs. The solution was to stop the robot cells individually for a short time. Some employees of the large bakery then manually stacked the fresh baked goods. The time required for the detailed measurement of the interior using a laser scanner was only 10 minutes per cell.  This meant that there were no disruptive influences on the production process.

The subsequent data processing with PointCab Origins then generated the layouts, which were available to the plant planners the very next day. This is where the compatibility of PointCab Origins paid off. In contrast to a point cloud, the plans could be easily transferred to the CAD systems Solidworks and Inventor for further processing. Complex plants very often involve several different technical planners. PointCab Origins enables the planning office Kvejborg to make the generated planning basis available to all partners involved in the planning process simultaneously – without additional costs.

Measurement of an automotive production plant - ThyssenKrupp

The company ThyssenKrupp was faced with the task of creating an efficient and complete measurement of an existing automotive production plant in a short time. The priority was to quickly transfer the scan results to existing CAD systems such as AutoCad, FactoryCad or RobCad for further processing. By surveying with 3D laser scanning technology, a real image of the entirety of all installations was created in a single measurement, giving the project the necessary planning reliability.

In the next step, a floor plan was calculated from the scan data using PointCab Origins. This was available to the engineers as a basis for planning on the very next day of the measurement and could be further processed in existing CAD systems without additional training on the topics of laser scanning and handling point clouds. An additional added value results from the fact that the independent file format of PointCab Origins enables the data to be made available to other partners.

Acquisition of complex piping systems – Export of precise dimensions

Niederreihnische Gas-Technik GmbH (NieGaTec) is a partner of the energy industry. Managing Director Klaus Jäger invested in the acquisition of a laser scanner in 2010 in order to improve his measurements. The complex pipeline structures in particular can be optimally recorded with the laser scanner. After purchasing the hardware, the question arose as to the optimal software for the rapid evaluation of the measurements. In the utility industry, 2D plans still dominate as a basis for work. Pipe runs are represented by line connections and gate valves, valves and other installations are indicated by symbols. Therefore, it was important for NieGaTec to quickly convert the 3D measurements back into layouts and sections.

After researching the market, the professionals chose PointCab Origins software because its ease of use and layout representation best met the needs of the gas industry. The layouts are read into AutoCAD through the PointCab Origins CAD export and drawn up by the staff. In this process, the symbol libraries developed by NieGatec can be used in their entirety. The interaction of laser scanning technology and PointCab Origins now enables NieGatec GmbH to guarantee its customers fast and precise measurements.

Acquisition of a limestone crushing plant

Plant engineering - ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik GmbH

On behalf of a cement plant in the Middle East, ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik GmbH used PointCab Origins to capture the data of an existing limestone crushing plant for plant engineering purposes by means of laser scanning. The goal of ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik GmbH was to compare the 3D laser scan data with an existing 3D CAD model of the plant design in order to concretely plan an expansion of the plant.

A laser scanner from the company FARO was used to scan a conveyor belt approximately 160 meters long for the plant design. The conveyor belt begins underground and ends at a discharge station 6 meters above the ground. The conveyor belt passes through several silos. The 3D model provided a real image of the plant and highly accurate dimensions, which provided an optimum planning basis for the plant expansion. Conversion work could be visualized concretely and finally on the PC, which greatly limited the risk of collisions during execution. The acquisition of the conveyor belt was very fast. The time required for the acquisition from different heights amounted to 3 days. The conveyor belt only had to be stopped for 2 hours. The result was 40 scans that were registered and evaluated with PointCab Origins directly on site. This ensured that all the required data was recorded and that a second survey (and thus disruption of the workflow) was not necessary.  The sections created in PointCab Origins were then used for further processing in AutoCAD.

Acquisition of factory halls

uni_siegen

University of Siegen in the capture of factory halls - architecture

The Interdisciplinary Competence Center for Old Buildings (InKA) of the University of Siegen realized the registration of a complete industrial plant with the help of laser scanning. This involved a built-up area of approx. 10,000 m². All supply and disposal lines had to be documented, which meant that a relatively large number of scans were required. The goal of the scanning and documentation was the 3D modeling of the work in the CAD system ArchiCAD. As a basis for this, floor plans and sections were generated through the total point cloud.

The area to be scanned in this project covered approx. 10,000 m², which were captured with a FARO Photon 80. The final result was 80 scans with a total data volume of approx. 7 GB. The subsequent modeling was to be done in Graphisoft ArchiCAD. How did PointCab Origins come into play at this point? Well, in the end it was possible to define sections at any point of the scans. The final product was a scaled pixel image with an accuracy of up to two millimeters per pixel. PointCab Origins then reduced the amount of data to a manageable size for CAD systems. Thus, the data output format was easily readable by all CAD systems commonly available on the market. By distributing the cut through the point cloud to several pixel files, the so-called “tiling”, the amount of data to be exported can be conveniently adapted for the respective CAD system. A huge advantage!

Conversion of production facilities

Conversion of production facilities - Intercem Engineering GmbH uses PointCab Origins

In an extensive project of Intercem Engineering GmbH, a leading provider of holistic solutions for the cement industry, 3D laser scanning technology was used for surveying. The project consisted of extensive tasks: on the one hand, a conversion of an existing filter on a concrete building. On the other hand, the installation of a new cyclone with filter system in the existing concrete framework of a heat exchanger.

A complete and highly accurate as-built documentation was required as a basis for the planning of the rebuild or installation. To avoid costly rework, 3D laser scanning was used to record the areas in question. The process proved to be fast, efficient and safe. Even areas that were difficult to access could be documented in detail thanks to the pinpoint accuracy of the recording. Laser scanning was used to generate real images of the scanned objects. These provided an optimum planning basis for precisely fitting prefabrication and consequently reduced the costs for conversion and installation. A laser scanner from FARO was used for this project. For the conversion of the filter system, 7 scans were made. A further 10 scans covered the heat exchanger. The mapping of the measurement results from the point cloud was done in FARO Scene. The point clouds were merged and then the floor plans were created. The final modeling of the resulting CAD data was done in Inventor. What was the contribution of PointCab Origins? In PointCab Origins, it was possible to quickly and easily define any sections in the floor plan. The subsequent import of the CAD data and its modeling in Inventor was surprisingly easy. Thus, thanks to PointCab Origins, an optimal planning basis was quickly created.
