Art Graphique et Patrimoire: digitally capture and document cultural sites

Art Graphique & Patrimoine was founded in 1994 out of a passion for sculpture and for the preservation of cultural heritage. Since then, AGP has managed many different projects that required traditional expertise as much as a progressive spirit of innovation. Over the years, AGP has accumulated more than 1500 prestigious references in France and abroad. Today, AGP is one of the leaders in France in the field of digital technologies for the acquisition and preservation of cultural heritage.

Art Graphique has used PointCab Origins to generate accurate othophotos from the extensive scan data of the buildings. You could see vivid examples of this just now in the video of Art Graphique et Patrimoine. Thanks to PointCab Origins it was possible to generate detailed orthophotos, regardless of the laser scanner file formats. Fast processing of very large and extensive point clouds is no problem thanks to PointCab Origins. All details are accurately captured and mapped. This creates a reliable basis for restorations and new components. In addition, Art Graphique creates impressive images through the versatile visualization options in PointCab Origins, which let the buildings shine in a new light.

Renovation of an old farmhouse

Renovation of an old farmhouse in Wattenwil near Bern – AAP Atelier für Architektur und Planung AG

For the renovation of an old farmhouse in Wattenwil near Bern, AAP Atelier für Architektur und Planung AG took over the surveying by means of 3D laser scanning as well as the evaluation. Since the object was hardly inhabited in the past years due to the high costs in maintenance, a renovation was to be carried out. This should allow the listed building to be fully used as a residential building again.

As a surveying method, laser scanning was the optimal solution for obtaining exact plans as a basis for planning the refurbishment work. The fast and precise recording with a laser scanner significantly reduced the time and thus also the costs for the refurbishment work. The data obtained made it possible to precisely determine the effort and material requirements for all rehabilitation measures. Even the smallest deformations and irregularities were accurately recorded. The recording of the building with the 3D laser scanner FARO Photon 120/20 could be realized within two days. Thus, facades, floor plans, the supporting structure and much more could be captured. For further use, the laser scanner data was used in the CAD system with ArchiCAD. Thanks to PointCab Origins, the results could be easily read into the CAD system ArchiCAD. Within a very short time, floor plans, sections and facades were generated. PointCab Origins convinced with its ease of use and flawless functionality. The detailed results required a relatively short calculation time.

Conversion of production facilities

Conversion of production facilities - Intercem Engineering GmbH uses PointCab Origins

In an extensive project of Intercem Engineering GmbH, a leading provider of holistic solutions for the cement industry, 3D laser scanning technology was used for surveying. The project consisted of extensive tasks: on the one hand, a conversion of an existing filter on a concrete building. On the other hand, the installation of a new cyclone with filter system in the existing concrete framework of a heat exchanger.

A complete and highly accurate as-built documentation was required as a basis for the planning of the rebuild or installation. To avoid costly rework, 3D laser scanning was used to record the areas in question. The process proved to be fast, efficient and safe. Even areas that were difficult to access could be documented in detail thanks to the pinpoint accuracy of the recording. Laser scanning was used to generate real images of the scanned objects. These provided an optimum planning basis for precisely fitting prefabrication and consequently reduced the costs for conversion and installation. A laser scanner from FARO was used for this project. For the conversion of the filter system, 7 scans were made. A further 10 scans covered the heat exchanger. The mapping of the measurement results from the point cloud was done in FARO Scene. The point clouds were merged and then the floor plans were created. The final modeling of the resulting CAD data was done in Inventor. What was the contribution of PointCab Origins? In PointCab Origins, it was possible to quickly and easily define any sections in the floor plan. The subsequent import of the CAD data and its modeling in Inventor was surprisingly easy. Thus, thanks to PointCab Origins, an optimal planning basis was quickly created.
